Most women choose to spend their maternity leave at home, but for Karen Edwards, her time away from work was the perfect opportunity to pack one singular backpack and explore the world with her husband and newborn baby.
The 31-year-old, alongside partner Shaun Bayes and baby Esmé, who was just 10-months-old, decided to sell their car, put their London house up for rent and head off on the adventure of a lifetime.
The pair, who were already experienced backpackers, were told that they were “completely nuts by Karen’s family when they found out what she was planning, but the trio were not be to put off.
“Both Shaun and I were keen backbackers before I fell pregnant and everyone thought we were completely nuts when we said that we were going to take Esmé when she arrived.”
“We have no regrets, she got to experience new sights, scenes and smells as she grew and that is incredible.”
Karen has now set up her own blog, Travel Mad Mum, to give new parents advice about travelling the world with their little ones.
And no doubt she will continue to pick up many more tips when she resumes her travels with little Esmé, who is now 17-months-old.
